When you are in the Screencast-O-Matic app on your computer you can add captions to a recording by clicking the CC icon next to the timeline.

You can either add captions from a captions file on your computer, use our speech-to-text service to request captions for the audio in your recording or start with blank captions to manually add them.

We're using a speech-to-text service from Google so if you choose that option your audio will be transmitted to that service for processing. Before doing speech-to-text you should make sure the correct language is selected in this drop down.

For this example we'll choose the option to start with blank captions which will start out by detecting silence in the audio and adding sections in the captions editor where captions should be shown.
0:49
From this point you can start to add caption text by clicking this play button in the first section which will start playing the audio at that point in the video. After a few words are played you should type the text for what you've heard which will pause the playback. After you've added that text you can press the ENTER key to resume playback and continue this process to fill in the text.
1:12
When playback reaches the end of the current section it will auto pause then when you're ready to go to the next section you can press ENTER to continue.
1:22
If there are long sections where silence wasn't detected automatically then you may want to manually add some sections to sync up where the text is displayed.
1:32
For example when we are playing back this recording we notice a spot where the text is lagging the audio and we'd like to tighten it up to show right at this spot.
1:41
To do that we can seek to the exact spot we'd like to show the text and then click the "+ Sync Point" option right above the timeline.
1:50
This will direct our attention to the section of text that is currently playing. We can place the text cursor right before the text we want to show and then click the ENTER key which will split that section marking that the text right after the cursor should be shown at that exact time in the video.
2:07
A short cut for this process is to seek to the point in the video and then position the cursor and press SHIFT-ENTER which will do the same thing.
2:16
After you've added captions you can include them when uploading to Screencast-O-Matic.com as closed captions so they can be shown or hidden.
2:25
You can also add as open captions when saving as a video file so the captions will always be displayed below the video.
