Screencast-O-Matic supports online or "cloud" backups. Perhaps you'd like to access your recordings on multiple computers or know that they are in a protected location in case something happens to your computer. In either case, Screencast-O-Matic Backup and Restore can help. Watch the video tutorials for Backup and Restore or refer to the article below for assistance.
Key reasons to use this feature:
- Backup so you can delete your original recordings and save local disk space.
- Backup so you can edit your recordings across multiple computers.
- Backup so you won't lose recordings if your computer is lost or damaged.
Please note that you will need to be logged in to your Premier account in order to use the secure backup feature.

How to Back Up a New Recording
After you create a new recording, or import a recording from a video file, you can backup that recording by going to the preview screen (shown in the screenshot below) and clicking the Backup dropdown in the upper right of the application window. (Video tutorial)
You will only see this option if you are logged in with your Premier account.
Click on the Backup drop down, and select Add Backup.
After you've enabled backups on a recording you'll see a green check mark next to the Backup drop down menu:
How to Backup Many Recordings
To enable backups on many recordings you can go to your list of recordings. (Video tutorial)
Click on the Manage Recordings checkbox in the upper left and begin to select recordings by clicking on individual recordings until they have a small light blue outline. (Learn more about managing recordings)
If you want to backup all of your recordings, you can click on All right next to the checkbox and all of the recordings in your library will be selected.
Next, click on Backup in the upper menu and a drop down will appear. If you'd like to backup the selected recordings, click Add Backup.
Please note that the "Backup" option will not appear unless you are logged in to your Premier account.
All the recordings selected will begin to upload to the secure online backup. You will see an upward facing arrow in the upper right of a recording that is currently being uploaded.
Important Note: If you close the application while recordings are backing up online, you will be prompted whether to continue or to wait until the next time you have the application open. Backups will automatically proceed the next time you have the application open.
Once completed, you can verify which recordings are backed up by seeing a green checkmark in the top right corner.
Which Recordings are Backed Up?
Go to your list of recordings. If any of your recordings are backed up, you will see a visual green checkmark on the top right of the recordings showing that it is backed up properly.
How Do I Remove Recordings From Backup?
If you'd like to stop recordings from backing up and remove them from the secure online backup, you can do this two ways.
The first way is to click on the recording to get to the detailed recording screen, and click on Backup in the upper right. In the drop down at the bottom, you'll want to select Remove Backup.
The recording will stop backing up and be removed from our secure online backup.

How to Restore One or More Recordings
Maybe you deleted a few recordings off your local computer or want to copy your library over to a new computer. We can restore these recordings to your library. (Video tutorial)
Go to your list of recordings in the Screencast-O-matic application. In the upper right, click on Restore.
The following screen will appear with those recordings that are backed up but not within your local computer's library. You can select recordings to restore in two ways
- Click on a single recording and it will immediately start restoring to your library.
- Click on the checklist icon in the top left and select all of the recordings you would like to restore. When done selecting multiple recordings, click Restore and your recordings will immediately begin restoring to your local library.
When restoring, you will see the following status message at the top of your application:
And when each recording is complete, you will see this message:
Now you should have your recordings restored properly to your library.
How do I backup ALL of my recordings at once?
Refer to the section on "How to backup many recordings" and make sure during recording selection to click the All option to select all recordings.
I don't see any recordings in the restore screen?
This means that all of the recordings that are marked for backup, also exist on your local computer and therefore there is no reason to restore them. If no recordings exist on your local computer, then all of the recordings that have been backed up will show in the restore screen.
You may want to double check that your recordings have been marked for backup by looking for the green checkmark as shown here.
What should I do if my computer lost all its recordings?
Make sure you are logged in with the account that you backed up the recordings on and start the screen recorder app. Go to the list of recordings and click "Restore" in the upper right. At this point, you can select all recordings and click "Restore" to download all the recordings back down from the online backup to your local computer.
How do I remove my recording from being backed up?
If you have one or more recording that you would no longer like backed up, you can click on the recording itself and click on "Backup" in the upper right. Now click on "Remove backup" and the recording will no longer be backed up.
In the case of many recordings, select the recordings using the checklist icon in the upper left and select the recordings. Click on "Backup" and then "Remove Backup" to stop these recordings from being backed up.
What happens if I delete a recording on my computer that is backed up?
The recording will disappear from your list of recordings but will still be backed up online. To retrieve the recording again, click on "Restore" in the upper right and select the recording to restore to your local computer.
What happens if I delete a recording that is NOT backed up?
As long as you didn't commit the deletes, you will still be able to retrieve the recording. However if these deletes were committed, your recording has been permanently deleted. You can see the Manage Recordings tutorial for more information.
If I modify or edit a recording on my computer, will it automatically be backed up online?
Yes. Once the local recording is edited, it will be automatically backed up and will replace the one backed up online.
Why don't I see the Backup option in the top right?
Make sure you are logged in to your Premier account in the screen recorder application. If you do not see it, you may not be logged in or don't have the feature enabled for your subscription.
What happens to my backups if I cancel my subscription?
If you cancel your Premier subscription or down grade to Deluxe then backups will be removed soon after you cancel or downgrade.
How does backup work when I'm offline?
The application waits until you are back online to backup/restore.
If you have made edits across 2 or more computers while offline, all of the edits will show up in the edit history, but only the latest edit from the last computer that came online will be the copy that is stored in backup. If this is not the version you want, you can use the Edit History feature to find the proper revision.
Can I backup video files that I imported?
Yes you can. The process is the same as backing up Screencast-O-Matic created recordings.
Using multiple accounts?
You can use multiple accounts with the Screencast-O-Matic recorder, however you will only be able to backup files with a Premier account. Important: If you want your changes to be backed up automatically, make sure you are logged in to your Premier account for immediate automatic backup.
Unable to backup?
Have you received the error "Failed to connect to online backup!"? Check to make sure you have internet connectivity. If so, please then check if an antivirus software may be hindering connectivity to backing up. If not an antivirus, check with your network administrator that a proxy is not interfering with the connection.
Is backup different from the hosting feature?
Yes. The backup feature is designed as a personal storehouse for your recordings. There is no sharing involved. This feature prevents a loss of work and allows work to be done across multiple computers.
Premier hosting, on the other hand, is for publishing and sharing recordings with individuals, teams, or publicly.
