You can flip a webcam recording, video, or image horizontally using either the screen recorder (webcam only) or video editor.
Key reasons to use this feature:
- You have signs or a whiteboard/chalkboard you would like to be readable when overlaying your webcam
- You want to create a lightboard effect
- You want imported images to face the opposite direction (horizontally)
The Flip Horizontal feature is available to all users.
Using the Screen Record to Flip Webcam
First, launch the recorder and select either "Webcam" or "Both" in order to turn on the webcam for recording. Flipping the main screen horizontally (not the webcam) will not be available during recording; however the screen recording can be flipped later in the video editor.
The recording area specific to the webcam has a magic wand that appears in the upper right of the webcam preview. Click on this to bring up the Webcam options menu.
In the webcam options menu, you can flip the webcam video by placing a checkmark in the "Flip Horizontal" area. Once checked, your video will be immediately flipped and show as a live preview of the webcam. The live preview will remain flipped during the recording session. The effect can be removed later in the video editor if needed.
Start your Recording
Once you have "Flip Horizontal" activated, click "OK" to exit the webcam settings window.
You can now begin your recording with your webcam video flipped by clicking the red "Rec" record button.
Using the Video Editor to Add or Remove the Horizontal Flip Effect
The Screencast-O-Matic video editor allows a user to flip horizontally any videos, screen recordings, or imported images.
Within the editor, click on the video recording or image that you would like to modify. In the case below, I have a webcam recording with the Flip Horizontal effect applied. Select the webcam video's area, then click "Options" on the dialog that appears to the right.
Within "Image Options", check/uncheck the Flip Horizontal box to add/remove the flipping effect. Click Done to finalize.
Finishing Up
Now that we have finished our edits, click "OK" or press Enter to accept these changes. Now you are all set to continue with further edits or save the recording.
