Unable to edit an imported video

Why can't I import or edit this video?

Most likely, the video is saved with High Efficiency (HEVC or HEIF), meaning that the video has been encoded with a compression method that we cannot read. Videos saved from iOS or Android devices are sometimes saved in HEVC/HEIF mode, over more standard formats, to reduce file size and save space. Looking to change that setting on your iOS or Android Device?

Screencast-O-Matic supports the more standard format for videos, H.264. You will need to use a third-party tool to convert the videos. You can find these converters online.

How do I change this setting on my iOS or Android device (to stop this from happening)?

To easily import and edit videos, make sure that your videos are saved in a compatible format.

iOS (iPhone or iPad)

  1. On iOS, you can access your camera settings by visiting, Settings > Camera > Formats.
  2. Choose "Most Compatible".

The settings vary on Android devices, but they are typically in the camera app. The Screencast-O-Matic app cannot import videos that are saved in High Efficiency (HEIF or HEVC) mode. You'll want to choose JPEG/H.264 or Most Compatible
